Description: This is a middle school lesson that I created for my 8th grade students. In this lesson, students were to reflect on their favorite places, learn about artists Ana Serrano and Adia Millett, and experiment with a variety of materials such as model magic, construction paper, beads, wooden blocks, popsicle sticks, pom poms, paint markers. By using all of these materials, students had to recreate a miniature version of their favorite place.

Rationale: The purpose of this lesson was for students to create a meaningful small sculpture of their most memorable or favorite place. They were to learn how to work with a variety of different materials and learn about different diverse artists who work with some of the same materials that we were working with.

Rationale: By going to the Art Institute of Chicago, I was able to be inspired by all of the artworks. I had a Miniature Places lesson for 8th grade, and being able to see the Thorne Rooms allowed me to gather more ideas on what materials could be used, ideas fro places that students could build, and different objects and scenery that could be added. When I created the project I had not thought about adding stairs or steps, and after seeing these mini rooms with so much detail, I think that I would show students how to make stairs out of paper the next time I teach the lesson.

Description: For my second PAL 1, I attended several workshops at the Illinois Art Education Association. In these workshops, I was able to gather several ideas for lesson plans and hear a lot of good advice for my first year of teaching.

Rationale: By attending these talks and workshops, I was able to expand my knowledge on teaching and take notes on what I could do to better support students. I learned about how we must teach about diverse artists in positive ways, how to support immigrant students, especially those who do not speak English, and new lesson ideas that involve a lot of inclusivity and creative expression.
